My example class is a group of 24 third graders in an urban district. It is a Title 1 school. Students of the example class are generally between eight and ten years old. Although some students are bilingual, no students are considered current ELLs. One student is in the process of having an IEP written, another is in the process of evaluation, and another student is on the spectrum. The class is creative and many students love to create and draw comics. Some students love to read and learn. Some of the students are extremely motivated. At least two students teach themselves new information and skills online already at home (one via YouTube and the other via Wikipedia). Some of the students are extremely difficult to motivate and exhibit extremely disruptive behaviors. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the class read on grade level. There is access to 5 desktop computers in the classroom, class sets of laptops are available in the building and iPads are also available for group work.
The seating chart varies based on behavior needs. Below are two options that are commonly seen in the classroom.
